Testing the fence
Hang the hook of the fence tester on the fence and press the copper tip gently into the ground. 
A short circuit is simulated on the fence, the same situation as when an animal touches the fence. 

Testing the electric fence
Hold the hook and the copper tip against the outputs of the device, you do not need to take the polarity into account, you can immediately check the power output of the device.
