Summer is finally approaching again! That means outings and holidays with the dog are coming up. While this is obviously a very fun time, it also requires extra preparations to keep the dog healthy, happy and safe. With the following tips, every dog owner will be well prepared for any situation.
General information
For day trips or holidays in your own country, a few essential products and measures are often enough. However, different rules may apply abroad. The basic requirements drawn up from the European Union are:
- the dog is chipped
- the dog has been vaccinated against rabies
- the dog has been (at least) dewormed against fox tapeworm
- the dog has a valid European pet passport
In addition, you will need to check in advance whether the dog breed is not banned in the holiday destination, whether it is compulsory to secure the dog in the car and whether the dog must wear a muzzle. There are many more points to consider. To be sure to prepare properly, it is best to look up all the rules within the holiday destination.
Besides measures, there are several products that are necessary or help keep the dog healthy, happy and safe during outings and on holidays. We have categorised these products by theme.
Essentials
Regardless of the destination, certain items are essential for the dog's safety and health and to be respectful of the environment. Make sure the dog is protected against ticks and fleas, for example with Knock Pest products against ticks and fleas. Also take a tick tool (such as the Zenpit Tick Tornado) with you to safely remove any ticks. Other essentials include a water bottle for hydration, sturdy poop bags (such as those from PoopyGo) and a Spotted! Pro tag, in case the dog gets lost.
Travelling
For safe and comfortable travel, it is crucial to make the right preparations. For car transport, travel cages for small dogs and benches for larger breeds are recommended. A car belt (such as the KONG Seat Belt Tether) is necessary for dogs in the back seat. For air travel, a sturdy kennel with food and water bowls is a must. For both car and air travel, we recommend Petmate's kennels. When travelling, allow for extra breaks so the dog can eat, drink and be let out for a while.
As nice as it may seem to go on holiday with the dog, some dogs experience stress while travelling or when in new surroundings. In that case, Excellent Pets No Stress products offer a solution. The No Stress Mix has a long-term calming effect (ideal during a long trip), while the No Stress Paste is perfect for use in exciting situations that are of short duration.
Playing and cooling off
In hot destinations, overheating is a risk. The best way to cool down is to let the dog play in and around the water. Dog Comets' floating, brightly coloured toys provide hours of entertainment and are easy to spot from a distance. No water around? Then a Coolpets cooling mat or a dog pool can provide cooling in any location. Always have a drinking bowl of fresh water ready, too. For a tasty reward on a hot day, the YowUp! Frozen Yoghurt is perfect. This is available in 3 delicious flavours.

Walking
For walks in various environments, dog shoes are essential to protect paws from sharp objects or hot surfaces. After a rain shower or fresh dip, a microfibre towel will help dry the dog quickly. A decent leash, possibly with reflective elements, increases safety during walks. Or choose a practical harness and leash in one from Easy Walk, which helps prevent pulling.
With the above tips & tricks, holidays and days out will be fun and safe for both dogs and owners!
